How to Apply Vehicle Window Tint

Window tinting is an excellent way to give your vehicle a sleek and professional appearance, as well as protect it from UV rays that could harm upholstery, dashboard, and trim. Not only that but tinting helps you stay safe by decreasing blind spots and improving night-time visibility.

Before you begin, clean your car’s windows thoroughly to remove any sand, dust or other obstructions that could disrupt the process. Once the film is in place, use a razor blade or utility knife to cut it to size. You may need to trim away some inches from the top and bottom edges, but should have enough material for covering your entire window.

Once you’ve cut your film to size, place it on the window and squeegee down over its edges. This will eliminate any air bubbles and give the window a smoother appearance. If you have access to a heat gun, this process can be expedited even faster.

Before applying the tint, it is necessary to first remove the clear liner that protects the adhesive. Application solutions can be purchased at most auto accessory stores; alternatively, you can make your own by mixing equal parts of water and liquid soap in a spray bottle.

When applying window film to your vehicle’s windows, be sure to inspect the side that says “liner.” This side should be facing you as you apply it.

You’ll be able to tell which side is adhesive by rubbing them against each other. One side will feel sticky and the other slick when touched.

Measure the length of tint you need for an accurate reading on how much is necessary. It’s wise to enlist the help of someone you trust if applying tint on your vehicle can be tedious and time-consuming if done alone.

Roll the film so it covers your entire window, with at least 2-3 inches extra tinting at the edges. Doing this prevents you from having to recut it after installation.

Once pliable, spray some hot water over the tint to make it more malleable. Once that’s done, spray with soapy water again and use a hard plastic smoothing card or squeegee to eliminate bubbles and give your window an even finish.
